“The Changing Nuclear Landscape with a Stop in Texas”

April 9 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join the Texas A&M University System National Laboratories Office and the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum in the library’s theater on April 9, 2024, as they cohost “The Changing Nuclear Landscape with a Stop in Texas” by Dr. Siegfried Hecker.

“The nuclear landscape has changed dramatically since Oppenheimer’s time of the Manhattan Project. The nuclear arms race during the Cold War produced some frightening moments but ended minus nuclear war. President George H.W. Bush’s skillful diplomacy helped to avoid the potential of a nuclear catastrophe following the collapse of the Soviet Union,” stated Dr. Hecker. “A period of dramatic decrease in the nuclear arsenals of the United States and Russia was followed by increasingly tense relations upon Russia’s dramatic invasion of Ukraine. Today, we face those that would seek the complete unraveling of the global nuclear order of the past seventy-five years.”

Dr. Siegfried Hecker is Professor of Practice within the Department of Nuclear Engineering at Texas A&M University, and at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. He spent 34 years at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and served as Director from 1986 through 1997.
