National Laboratories and Sites

General DOE Fellowships

DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

  • Undergraduate seniors
  • Individuals with a B.S. or B.A. degree and not enrolled in graduate school
  • First-year graduate students (M.S. degree or Ph.D. students with or without M.S. degree)
  • Students enrolled in an M.S. degree program who are beyond the first year with planned full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D.
  • Individuals with an M.S. degree who are not enrolled in graduate school for two years prior to resuming graduate studies

GEM Fellowship Program

  • Members of the following under-represented groups in science and engineering: American Indian/Native, African American/Black and/or Hispanic American/Latino
  • Admitted into a GEM Member University graduate program with confirmed department funding support
  • U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident

NEUP-Integrated University Program Graduate Fellowship

  • U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Early stages of graduate work
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale for both undergraduate and graduate work
  • Only 4 fellowships per institution will be awarded

Rickover Fellowship Program in Nuclear Engineering (RFP)

  • Have an undergraduate degree in mathematics, computational science, physical science or engineering
  • Beginning graduate studies (on or before September 1, 2021)
  • Current graduate students who are enrolled in a qualified course of study
  • U.S. citizen (any applicant with dual citizenship is required to revoke their non-U.S. citizenship in order to be to accept the award)
  • Capable of obtaining a security clearance from the DOE

Stanton Nuclear Security Fellowship

  • U.S. citizen
  • Strong record of professional achievement
  • Postdoctoral fellows or junior faculty in a tenure-track position at a recognized university
  • Junior faculty at law schools or with a law degree as their terminal degree are also eligible

Nuclear Nonproliferation International Safeguards (NNIS) Graduate Fellowship Program

  • U.S. Citizen
  • About to enroll in or currently enrolled in a qualified course of study at a participating university
  • At least one full year of graduate work remaining at the beginning of September 2021
  • Candidates with dual citizenship must notify the University of South Carolina Aiken (USCA), Special Programs, Charleston Office

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)

Lawrence Fellowship

  • Within one year of completing a Ph.D. (employment may not start until Ph.D. requirements have been verified) or have received a Ph.D. degree within five years of being hired

Livermore Graduate Scholar Program

  • Full-time graduate students pursuing a Ph.D.
  • Completed the majority of graduate coursework and passed any required comprehensive examinations
  • Have a thesis advisor and an identified LLNL technical supervisor

Applied Machine Learning Summer Research Fellowship

  • Graduate students from all science, math, computer science and technology fields who are seeking to incorporate machine learning into their research careers
  • Should have a background in probability theory, statistical methods, algorithms or statistical learning

G.T. Seaborg Postdoctoral Fellows

  • Approved for division funding by the LANL postdoctoral program
  • Performing research in materials, material properties, signatures, modeling, predictions, fabrication, detection, disposal, global security implications, forensics, and the specialized science surrounding actinides and especially plutonium, uranium and their surrogates as fuels for energy and nuclear weapons

Seaborg Institute Summer Fellowship Program

  • Enrolled full-time at the time of application
  • Fellowships offered in Nuclear and Radiochemistry, and Actinide Science

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)

Truman Fellowship

  • Have a Ph.D. awarded within the past three years at the time of application or completed Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment,
  • No previous postdoctoral appointments at a national laboratory (pre-postdoc internships excluded)
  • U.S. citizen

John von Neumann Fellowship

  • JVN_Fellowship_Flyer_2021
  • D. conferred within the past three years or have completed Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment
  • Degree in applied/computational mathematics or a related area, such as computer science, engineering or statistics

Jill Hruby Fellowship

  • D. conferred within the past three years or have completed Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment
  • No previous postdoctoral appointments at a national laboratory (internships excluded)
  • U.S. citizen

Critical Skills Recruiting Master’s Fellowship Program

  • Recently obtained a bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Qualify to attend a Sandia approved graduate school
  • Underutilized minority status
  • U.S. citizens

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL)

Wilkinson Fellowship in Scientific Computing

  • Recently earned a Ph.D.
  • Interest in applying scientific computing methods to science and engineering applications, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), climate and weather models, molecular dynamics, power grid and design of complex systems such as PDE-constrained design of cloaking devices, as well as many other areas.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL)

Goldhaber Distinguished Fellowships Program

  • Must have earned a Ph.D. in the past three years and have training in any discipline pertinent to the lab’s mission.

Fermilab

Wilson Fellow

  • Must have a Ph.D. in physics with at least two years of post-doctoral experience.

Lederman Fellow

  • Details are specified in the advertisement when a new opening becomes available
  • Either have obtained a Ph.D. in an appropriate field after September 1, 2018 or expect to obtain a Ph.D. in an appropriate field by September 1, 2020

Peoples Fellow

  • Earned a Ph.D. within the past three years in accelerator physics or accelerator-related technology
  • Earned a Ph.D. within the past five years in high energy physics or a related field
  • At least three years of post-doctoral experience in high energy physics or a related field

Neutrino Physics Center Fellowship Program

  • Master’s students, Ph.D. students, post-doctoral fellows and senior researchers are all eligible to apply

Schramm Fellow

  • Must have a Ph.D. in physics with a proven research record

Visiting Scholars Program

  • Individual proposals may be submitted by researchers who are faculty, postdocs or graduate students at URA-member universities doing research in areas such as high energy physics experiments, astrophysics, theory, accelerator physics, materials science, computer science, engineering and accelerator R&D related to the Fermilab mission
  • Applicants must be employed by or, in the case of graduate students, enrolled at URA member institutions during the course of the award.

Ben Lee Fellow

Intensity Frontier Fellows

  • Must have a Ph.D. in Experimental or Theoretical Particle or Nuclear Physics
  • Retirees and Fermilab employees are not eligible

Rajendran Raja Fellowship

  • Must be a citizen of India and be able to obtain necessary visa (or other documentation if necessary) to work at Fermilab as a visiting Guest Researcher.

Bardeen Engineering Leadership Program

  • Must have earned a master’s or doctoral degree in engineering from an accredited institution within the past three years.

URA Graduate Thesis Award

  • To qualify, the thesis must have been submitted as partial fulfillment of the Ph.D. requirements, be written in English, and must have been submitted in electronic form to the Fermilab Publications Office in accordance with Fermilab policy.

Idaho National Laboratory (INL)

Graduate Fellowship Award

  • Applied to or be enrolled in a Ph.D. program in a science or engineering discipline
  • Have the support of the university to provide tuition coverage during the pre-candidacy portion of the degree program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale

Panofsky Fellowship

  • Candidates should be early in their career but have demonstrated experience at the postdoctoral level and be widely recognized as having potential for exceptional scholarship, breadth, innovation, and leadership
  • Research plan should encompass one or more areas within the science program at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility

JSA/Jefferson Lab Graduate Fellowship Program

  • Undergraduate senior or a graduate student
  • Enrolled full-time in a relevant doctoral program at a SURA member university
  • Not concurrently holding another major full-time fellowship or internship
